I need to know, how far the black paint is supposed to go over the lip of the fender, into the flange of the engine compartment. Does anyone know what is correct, maybe a photo ? Thanks!

According to Year One, the stripes are 2.75" from the outside of the fender with a 11.5" gap in the center of the hood. I don't have a scanner, but the YO catalog has a good drawing of what it should look like.

I think the factory just would have sprayed it, it would not have been masked, so to do it right you should just shoot it like they did with the hood on the car in the closed position.

We just shot it with the hood closed, but I wondered in Ma Mopar took it over the edges. Maybe an overestored job would be neater. Thanks

Yep Over restored would be nicer.

hi. as stated before on here, the stripes were painted on with the hood in the closed position and whatever leaked in, leaked in. i've never seen an original, unrestored car that had signs of any areas being taped off below hood level by the factory before spraying.
another area where every car seems to be done a little different is the outer edge line of organosol sprayed on the fender tops and cowl. i've seen that width end everywhere from dead-center of the outer headlight to being a straigh line from the outer edge of the cowl foward(as in another inch or so more than the headlight center). most people seem to do the latter, they run a straight line from the edge of the cowl forward but i think anywhere "in that area" would be considered correct. remember these cars were all taped off and sprayed by hand so there is no exact correct position per-say. Thanks! rich

I laid out the stripes on my GTX using the YO dimensions, they just didn't look right. They appeared to taper in towards the front. To get the stripes parallel I measured the width of the cowl and used the same dimension at the front of the car. Here's how it looked when I was finished.

Thanks Guys,
It seems as I susspected. Ma Mopar may have had specifications/dimensions , but it must have varied from car to car, depending on what/how much the painter had to drink the night before ! I'll finish this car what looks best for it. Since it is over restored, the hood treatment shall be neater than Ma Mopars workmanship!
