Steering Gear

Manual steering gear

I'm restoring a 70 Challenger R/T and thought I would suck out the old steering gear fluid and fill with new. I found it empty but with the gear packed with grease. Is it possible that the last owner had a seal leak so instead of fixing it, ran it empty and greased like that? The car has been sitting for twenty years. Should I try to get the grease out then fill it up with gear oil to see if the seal leaks? Or can I run it packed with grease instead of the recommended lube? Any comments appreciated. Thanks

No, they originally used a heavy grease that was somewhat akin to military spec gear grease. Very thick, and appears to have some molybdenum particles in it. Almost like mixing bearing grease, and neversieze. Dennis
